A Message from the Rector
Greetings to all of you in our Benefice of Caldicot, Portskewett, and Rogiet. I’m so sorry that due to the Pandemic I have been unable to meet you all face-to-face. I appreciate those of you who have been able to attend our limited services in St. Mary’s Caldicot, and more recently in Portskewett’s Church Hall. We are in the middle of a risk assessment for Rogiet’s Church Hall and hope to have services soon. We are now in the season of Advent, a time of watching and waiting. A time of looking back and looking forward.
Looking back to the first coming of the Christ in a manger in Bethlehem and looking forward to His appearing again. It is so easy to skip Advent and move right on to Christmas as we are tempted to do, with all the festivities, presents, decorations, carols, etc. However, especially in this time of the Pandemic, I would encourage us all to enter into the spirit of Advent. It is a time for reflection before the upcoming celebration of the Christ’s birth (albeit somewhat curtailed this year). Many of us are feeling lonely and isolated and can identify with those in Zechariah’s prayer: “Those walking in the shadow of darkness.” Let us together look back to the time when God broke into our lives with the birth of a poor carpenter’s son in a barn, filled with grace and truth. But let’s also look back to the time where He broke into our own lives with love and forgiveness.
Let us also patiently look forward to the Christ breaking into our lives again, perhaps in spectacular fashion, but no less importantly than in a call from a friend, a kind word from our neighbour, a visit from a fellow church member. When we realise that we are all infused with the Christ (In Him we live and move and have our being) we begin to realise that He is not far from us, but very near indeed!
